# Pig Genesis #

Edith and Bear seem to be rubbing along together pretty well so far. The whole herd enjoyed bounteous apples thanks to a passing friend and with full tummies, slept in the sunshine.

3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and the first Swanbridge Berkshire piglets will be welcomed into the world, with a fair wind behind us.

!! Edith !!

This is Exelsa Edith who is a young, Pedigree Berkshire gilt brought in to mate with Bear the Berkshire Boar. She has been with us for a month and tomorrow, I plan to open the fencing between them.

Their progeny would form the Swanbridge herd (the Swanbridge prefix having been formally approved) in recognition of their location and in memory of our family home.

THANK YOU to all you wonderful people who bought Swanbridge pork – I have had tremendous pleasure visitng you all and having tea, mince pies, biscuits and even a steak for my efforts ! I am now exhausted and about to enjoy said steak!
My pigs are a joy to me but they must have a purpose otherwise we pig-lovers couldn’t afford to keep them and we, as a nation, couldn’t continue to value these fine old rare breeds. We must treat our animals with the respect and care they deserve throughout their lives and we owe it to them to make good use of them. Always.

Valerie Chicken

As of 2016, Swanbridge pork and lamb will be available to buy directly from Valerie Chicken as well as through David Lush Butchers, Penarth.

I have been breeding my own Berkshire and Middle White pigs since 2013 and am now moving into pure bred, pedigree Berkshires. Bear, the Kilcot Peter Ladd boar, arrived here this year having come 2nd at the Royal Berkshire Show thanks to his breeder, Sharon Barnfield. His partner, Excelsa Edith, arrived more recently and comes from Chris Impey’s herd.

I also have a starter flock of pedigree, rarebreed Swanbridge Castlemilk Moorit sheep – originally developed in Dumfries to resemble deer and up from the Isle of Wight this year from the Godshill flock.

Berkshire pigs are known for their gentle temperaments and delicious meat with fine fat veining. Castlemilk Moorits are known for their quality meat and their fine wool.
